Every garage has one drawer that turns into a junk drawer. Mine used to. Then, about four years ago, I bought the DEWALT 108-Piece Mechanics Tool Set, and that problem solved itself. The set lives behind the seat of my 2011 F-150 now, and it comes inside for most of the bolt work I do on my truck and on Marlene's 2016 Honda CR-V. I am Earl Dobbins. I spent 30 years fixing loaders and graders for the county road department, and I have kept my own vehicles running at home for longer than that. This is not the fanciest set I have ever owned. It is the one I reach for most.

A socket set is one of those things you do not appreciate until you need it on a Sunday evening with the parts store closed. Here are the ten reasons this one earns its spot in a home garage.

The set that lives behind my truck seat

After four years of roadside fixes and weekend jobs, the DEWALT 108-Piece Mechanics Tool Set is the one I grab first. See today's price on Amazon.

Ten Reasons It Earns Its Spot

1

It covers the sizes a home garage actually uses

The set includes both 1/4 inch and 3/8 inch drive sockets, in SAE and metric. The 1/4 inch drive sockets run from 5/32 up to 3/8 inch on the SAE side, and the metric side starts at 4 millimeters. That range sounds small until you realize most of the bolts on a modern car or truck live in that neighborhood. You are not rebuilding a dozer with this set. You are changing alternators, brackets, and interior trim, and this is the size range those jobs call for.

2

Six-point sockets grip the corners, not the points

The sockets in this set are six point, which means they wrap around the head of a bolt and grab the flat sides. A twelve point socket can slip on a rounded bolt head. A six point socket does not. When you are lying on your back under a truck with a bolt that has seen years of road salt, you want all the grip you can get. This is the kind of detail that does not show up in a photo but shows up the first time a bolt fights back.

3

SAE and metric in one case means no second trip

My F-150 is mostly SAE fasteners. Marlene's CR-V is metric. Travis's car, depending on what he shows up with, could be either. With this set, I do not have to guess which system I need before I crawl under the hood. Both are in the same case, in the same trays. That alone has saved me a dozen trips back to the tool chest over the years, and on a cold garage floor, a dozen trips is a dozen too many.

108 pieces covers the odds and ends

A 108 piece set means the odd size you need is usually already in the case. It is the one socket that walks off, or the size you did not think you owned, and with this many pieces the odds are in your favor. I have done plenty of weekend jobs on the CR-V and never once had to run to the parts store for a socket I did not have. That is the whole point of a set this size.

5

The case fits behind the seat of my F-150

The case measures 15.75 by 11.61 by 3.54 inches. That is small enough to live behind the seat of my pickup, which is exactly where this set has spent the last four years. When a hose blows on the side of the road, or a battery dies in a parking lot, I have a full set of sockets with me without a second thought. You cannot use a tool that is sitting at home in the garage.

It is built for automotive work

DEWALT lists this set for automotive use, and the choices they made back that up. The hex drive system and the hex shank bits are made to work with screwdrivers and wrenches, not just sit in a drawer. These are tools designed for reaching into engine bays and working around brackets, the kind of tight spots a home mechanic deals with every weekend. That is where a set like this earns its keep.

7

There are bits in the set, not just sockets

A socket set that only has sockets is only half useful. This one includes a bit set with hex shanks that fit screwdrivers and wrenches, so when a job needs a driver bit instead of a socket, it is in the same case. That is the difference between finishing a job and stopping to hunt for a separate bit driver somewhere in the garage.

8

It saves the Sunday evening panic

Most home repairs happen when the stores are closed. I cannot count the number of times this set has turned a would-be tow truck call into a roadside fix. When the F-150 threw a check engine light a couple of years back, I had the tools to get the parts off, do the job, and put it back together the same afternoon. No shop, no waiting, no Saturday lost.

9

It earns its spot for the next generation too

Travis, my son, lives in Sacramento and drives over when his car needs work. The first thing I do is hand him this case and let him find the socket he needs. A set like this is how a person learns that most car work is not hard, it just requires the right tool. Watching him go from handing me tools to pulling a caliper himself has been worth it.

The DEWALT name means it holds up

I spent 30 years around shop tools, and I have seen cheap sockets round off on the first hard pull. This set has been behind my truck seat for four years, through heat, cold, and the occasional drop on concrete, and the sockets still fit snug on the bolts. DEWALT builds tools for people who use them, and this set has earned its spot in my garage.

What I'd Skip

If you are a professional mechanic turning wrenches 40 hours a week, this is not the set for you. You will want 1/2 inch drive sockets for suspension work, a bigger range of specialty tools, and a heavier duty case that can take a beating on a shop floor. And if you only own one vehicle that is newer and under warranty, you may not need a 108 piece set at all. A smaller kit would cover the basics. This set shines for the home garage, for the person who does their own brakes and oil changes and the occasional roadside fix, not for someone who needs every size in existence.

Four years that set has lived behind the seat of my F-150, and I cannot remember the last time a bolt beat me because I was missing a socket.
